Witchhazel (Hamamelis x intermedia pallida)
I have long searched for a way to photograph this wonderful plant. Its unruly flowers are not beautiful but wildly disorganized and the yellow colour makes for a difficult contrast. But the effect this plant has on us in winter is like an anti-depressant: it lifts everyone's spirits. The sight of it reminds us of an exuberant bright sunny day; in addition it exudes a very fine scent. No wonder it can bewitch people. But simple pictures of its chaotic petals don't do it justice.

These are image overlays which to me show more of its effect and character.
We grow it in large pots on our terrace to keep it close so we can admire it from the warm inside on cold winter days, when it is at its best. It is a very slow grower and with ample fertilizing and watering in spring, it returns each winter to surprise us with its uplifting Lebensfreude.
