Maldivian Wildlife - Flying Foxes

Fruit bats, also called flying foxes, are a common site on the Maldive islands. A casual observer might mistake them for large birds, but the wings and flight patterns look different.  During the heat of the day they hang with their heads down in trees sleeping or munching nuts. In the evenings they can be seen flying around. These large bats feed on fruit, nectar and pollen only and have well developed senses of sight and smell unlike their smaller relatives.

They climb in their trees like squirrels using hind legs and extended thumbs from their hands on wings.
