Angkor : Royal City Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom, the Great City of the Khmer Empire, is another work by Jayavarman VII, who created this grand city around 1200 AD surrounded by a wall, 12 km long, with his palace inside and the huge and impressive Bayon temple in its centre.

Five gates , North, East, South and West and one Victory Gate, all lavishly decorated with faces and three-headed elephant sculptures, make openings in the wall surrounding the city.

The wall around Angkor Thom is surrounded by a moat, 100 m wide, with bridges decorated with protective warriors spanning it.

The largest temple, the Bayon, is one of the highlights of a visit to Angkor.  216  faces - I did not count - keep watching you from 54 towers wherever you walk. It must have been quite an impression on the people living here under constant scrutiny at those times... CCTV in old Khmer style with a direct upload link to the Gods ....
