Excursions from Berlin : the Limestone Quarries of Rüdersdorf

This summer seems to be one of "Bau - Steine - Erden" . After our excursion to the marble quarries on the Lahn to find the stone used on the Berliner Dom, my next excursion led me to another quarry : the limestone quarry in Rüdersdorf near Berlin !

Most of the Berliner Dom exterior comes from this quarry, as well as the old Opera "Unter den Linden", the Brandenburger Tor, the Reichstag and probably many more ! This huge quarry has been active since the 13th century and still is.

Next to the quarry is a "museum park" where the old lime kilns and technical equipment can be visited - it feels like one of those "lost places", forgotten and kept in its original state.

An oven "battery" from the 19th century can be explored from inside and outside. Today the area is used for  exhibitions and other cultural projects.

The  limestone blocks or burnt lime from the quarry or these kilns was customarily transported to Berlin over the river Spree, later by railway waggons.

This used to be a canal, filled up when not in use any more.
