Plant of the Month : Knotweed

"Knöterich"  or Knotweeds are rather non-descript and often overlooked, hardy plants that live on any meadow or on the side of a dirt track through agricultural fields. Most are considered weeds.

For the garden there is a wide choice of rewarding varieties.  I like their reliability, their spiky appearance and their very long extended flowering periods from July on. Recently, the genus has undergone several very confusing name changes and what used to be Polygonum may now either be Bistorta, Persicaria or Polygonum species.

A large planting is behind the Bundeskanzleramt in Berlin in the "Spurengarten" of the Spreebogenpark on the river Spree.

The tiny species Bistorta microcephalon "Red Dragon"  (or Polygonum affine or Persicaria affinis) makes a very nice ground cover in shady and not too dry areas:

Polygonum root extracts are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for many different purposes and in skin and hair products with assumed "anti-aging and anti-greying" effects. But working in the garden may already have the same effect, as the well-known proverb goes:  If you want to be happy for a short while, fall in love; be happy for a year, get married; but if you want to be happy for a lifetime, become a gardener.
